Spiraling Collection

I created the first pieces of this collection while I was living in Harlem. At the time I was struggling with housing and working countless of gigs. I was always busy, not making enough money, and didn't have enough time to do any of my art. My mental health was rapidly getting worse. I was not sleeping, not eating, I was always broke, and my housing situation was always unstable. I was basically, well...spiraling! When I was creating the first pieces of the collection, I only had Sharpies and these wooden planks that I got from this catering gig I did in the Financial District. I just started doodling swirls, which I usually do on any scrap of paper; especially when stressed. I took my love of portraiture, symbolism, and of course, swirls, then combined them to make these dynamic pieces! This technique has helped me also let go of some of the perfectionism that I would hold on to while doing art. I realized that every line, every layer, and everything that I viewed as a “mistake” needed to be there to truly express what was feeling while creating them. And I have a loooooot of feelings and thoughts that swirl on and on…

Now this method has become one of my staple styles that I use when creating new pieces!
